My Viewpoint

Because I previously mentioned biases, it’s time you know a bit about mine.

I love new technology!

However, I will NOT recommend any new technology for a client before it has been in use for, at least six months.  I do not want to expose my clients to the problems that always happen with new technology.  I do not want to be associated with the “bleeding leading edge!”

I will install new technology earlier than that 6-month waiting period, if there is a pressing need for the client to use the new technology.  I will also install new technology if my client insists on the new technology.

No matter what, if I have to spend ANY time supporting the new technology or anything associated with the new technology, my consulting fees usually immediately double with a two-hour minimum.  Most clients find they do not really need the new technology as badly as they thought they did after the realization of possible encountering higher consulting fees.

Let’s look at a personal example involving new technology.

When I refused to install a hot new technology item, one of my clients decided they would find a new consultant who would install what they wanted.

A few months later, I encountered the new consultant at one of the local wholesale suppliers, who proceeded to fill me in on how the new technology was working.  Not only did the new technology installed not work anywhere near as well as the client expected, it had cost the client some hefty revenue.

Furthermore, I found that the new consultant was not happy because he had not yet been paid not only for his consulting, but also for the new technology itself.

If you truly need new technology, then install it and use it with caution.

I prefer to let some else “hit the potholes.”
